5 Time Management Tips for Working College Students

As a full-time student at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, I have experienced first-hand how hard it can be to stay ahead of schedule without feeling overwhelmed or not having time to get all assignments complete. Being at the university for several semesters and working 36+ hours a week, I use these 5 important tips that keep me on track with my responsibilities in school and with work. I hope these tips can also help you.

  • Organize your calendar: This is very important when it comes to planning what you will get done and when you will get it done. In college, professors provide us students with a syllabus showing when assignments will be due throughout the semester. Using an agenda or even a phone calendar to set reminders for these assignments helps to not forget about upcoming assignments, and it allows for you to create set timeframes to work on things ahead of time.
  • Reward yourself: Give yourself rewards for completing tasks on time or ahead of schedule. By doing so, this will make you feel better about getting tasks done on time, and it also gives you more of a reason to get things done on the schedule created in your calendar.
  • Prioritize: Tests, homework and assignments can stack up very fast when you are taking multiple classes. It is important to prioritize the course that is the hardest for you. By doing so, you will give yourself more time and prevent cramming for a subject that has been difficult to learn or remember.
  • Understand yourself: Some people feel more energy in the morning and others get their energy late at night. Understand the way your body functions and how you learn when you’re at your highest level of energy. Set up your schedule so you work on school assignments during this time to be most productive.
  • Set goals: Setting goals is the most important tip I can give you. Create a 30-day goal. I have realized that every semester, every student starts off with the burst of energy to do better than the previous semester. However, after a month into the semester, it is easy to lose that energy and fall back into old patterns. Creating a 30-day goal (and creating another after completing the first), serves as a reminder that you have done well so far and it will regenerate that energy from the beginning of the semester.
